Pathway to Destiny

The two sat down in the officers section, Sevec sat opposite Casandra.
“I hear we are to resume trade with Noltaire.” Sevec commented.
Cas half laughed, “If Mark had his way we’d ship half our residents back there.”
Sevec corrected her, “If Mark had his way they would all be slaughtered instead of a drain on the system. Your opinion matters more to him than most people.” His mechanics clicked and whirred as he continued. “The reason he’s reopening trade with Noltaire is we need to create some form of revenue to support these migrants. Relved is getting called back to set up work farms for the rest of the unemployed residents here. There’s a food shortage in Noltaire, and they suffer from extreme poverty. That is why they all deserted that place and braved the wild ocean to come here. But now…”
Sevec paused and let his mechanics settle into a silence before beginning again. “He will take control of them and use them as slave labor on the work farms, as he does the soldiers. They will eat a bland nourishment that will give them every nutrient they require to run at full capacity. The food can be sold at a cheaper price so Noltaire can afford to buy it.”
“So Jonothan will be coming back?” Casandra asked quickly.
“No.” Sevec shook his head. “He already is done. Mark turned these himself.”
Casandra froze when she heard this, “I didn’t know he could.”
“He has possession of some Earthling…”
“Jasylin?” Cas couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “Where is she?”
Sevec looked Cas straight in the eye, “She hasn’t been born yet.”
