Pathway to Destiny

Meanwhile in the Future…

The doors opened and I watched Mark walk inside. He poured himself a drink and sat on the other couch. He turned the news on the window screen, but there was no sound. He spoke without taking his eyes off the screen. “I’ve been thinking about your place in society, everyone here must pull their weight. You have ideas that can put the lower ten percent of the population to work. I do not want to refute science to an entire population that has grown up learning the value of a good DNA report. DNA clearly dictates these people have mental and physical limits to what they can achieve in life. Yet, you say there is something more to this life than science. I’m inclined to think it true. I’m going to create a branch of assisted government, sponsored by DawnCo. It will be used to educate and find employment for the Locaid residents in every city on Caslitak. You will be head of the entire operation.”
He glanced over at me, “You will figure out what they can do that will benefit society as a whole. Then you can figure out how to implement your plan of improvement.” He spoke as if he was giving a presentation at city hall. “If it fails, you can then explain their value to the Caslitakians through social and media campaigns. Maybe you can appeal to their humane nature, compassion over science.”
“And if that fails?” I asked.
Mark looked back at the silent news screen. His tone sounded so final as he answered, “Eradication.”
    “Are there any factories?”
“Any manual labor is not needed, robotics tend to do anything human muscle could provide for. You have to think a lot smarter than that. There is no room for pollution, there is no land for agriculture.” Mark turned off the news. “I would not hand you such a task if I did not think you would succeed. I know you are not prone to failure.”
