Believers

“I can’t believe we rowed over here and we’re not going to get any fireworks.” Jeremy complained as they approached Firework Junction.

Evan smiled at Mr. Tyler as the group approached.
“Buddy” Tyler is probably the last of the cowboy gentlemen. His blonde hair always looks windswept, above his sparkling blue eyes. Eyes that sparkle the brightest when addressing the ladies. His bright smile can light up any room, even thought it’s normally hidden behind a day or twos growth of stubble. He always wears cowboy attire and his brown leather boots are always dusty. Buddy never married. “Almost once.”, he always says. Even at forty six he had a string of admirers.
“How can I help you boys?” Mr. Tyler smiled and got off his stool.
“”We didn’t come to buy firework this year.” Evan looked as serious as he could. They all did.
Buddy took on a look of concern, “Why don’t you tell me all about it?”
Rodney stepped forward, “You remember three summers ago when you told us about that Werewolf you thought you wounded?”
“Yeah….” Buddy waited to see where it was going.
“That wasn’t just a campfire story was it?” Mandy questioned almost dreading the answer.
     “Why do you ask?”
“Eileen Matton was killed by Vampires.” Max spat it out.
Buddy narrowed his eyes and studied the youths. “Actually….” He reached up and closed the front panel to the firework stand and shut off the lights. “I know a little something about that.” He concluded as he stepped out the side door and padlocked it shut. “Come on to the R.V.” he motioned to his makeshift house for the next four weeks.

“The problem is,” Buddy leaned against the kitchen counter. “These Vampires are real. Not your regular movie going stuff is going to work here. Holding up the cross, throwing holy water, all that is just in the movies. It’s symbolic as to what you’re really supposed to do. I don’t know that I can explain it all to you. You’d have better help talking to your pastor. At least he can do a better explanation of what is the meaning of the cross and holy water. And there’s NO WAY I would advise you to go after them. Let the adults take care of this. But if this interests you, then by all means learn about it. Then learn how to train. Because one day you’ll be the ones who have to take up the fight.”
Clan Eileen looked at each other as if they had all just received their calling.
