Teenage Ghost
Rhonda ran to Fortuness as soon as it opened.
The store had a few customers browsing things already when Rhonda rushed in like whirlwind of emotion.
“I thought I saw Jeff!” she exclaimed as she walked in the open doorways.
Every eye in the place turned and looked at the disheveled blonde woman who barged in like a wild woman.
“It was for a split second at the elementary school play you sent me too. How is that possible?” Rhonda sounded crazed. “Right before he appeared something weird happened with everyone’s cellphones. The cellphones all seemed to loose power. Then for a split second I saw him standing there. What does it mean?”
A mocha skinned, elderly woman dressed in bohemian clothes was looking at the home made candles. She spoke out as she held a large handmade, white candle in her hands. “It means he’s passed on to the other side, Honey. It means he’s a ghost.”
Rhonda’s face had already been pale, but now it was ghastly. She fell to her knees at the thought of Jeff being dead somewhere, and she had no idea where to find him. Who had killed him or why. Did he feel pain? She hoped he hadn’t felt any pain.
The elderly woman rushed to Rhonda’s side and knelt beside her, “Oh Honey! You didn’t know.” She embraced Rhonda in a motherly embrace and rocked her back and forth. “Who was he?”
“Her child.” Eartha said behind the counter as she checked out an anxious customer.
“Oh Sweetheart!” The elderly woman exclaimed. “I know exactly how you feel.” she hugged Rhonda tighter. “I’m Evelyn Bishop, I lost my son decades ago over foolish decisions and bad choices. We do our best to raise them and protect them. In the end, we can only hope we have taught them how to fend for themselves.”
Rhonda said nothing she just silently cried and thought about Jeff. She imagined a million terrible things that might have happened to him.
“Do you want to come with me and maybe talk, or not talk but just sit quietly and let the time pass together?” Evelyn asked Rhonda. “I know a tea room in a small themed shopping square, two blocks from here. They have all kinds of calming teas and comfort sandwiches. My treat.”
Eartha moved from behind the counter, she had to get this distraught woman out of her business before she ruined it. “Yes, yes I think that’s for the best right now.” Eartha leaned downed next to Rhonda, “Get your thoughts straight and calm down, when you are back in balance come back here and we will talk again.”
