Teenage Ghost
Vi walked up to Evan as he grabbed his books to take home from school. “So, where does Jeff’s mom live?”
Evan glanced at her over his shoulder, “Don’t you know?”
Vi shrugged and leaned against the locker, “He moved, I don’t know where lives.”
Even looked back to make sure he had everything from his locker and closed it. “I’m pretty sure he didn’t move.”
“I don’t know where he lives, all right?” Vi said incredulously. “Can you walk me by there on your way home?”
Evan pulled his backpack up on to his shoulders. “Yeah, alright.” he walked down the hallway. “Let’s go.”
The two began walking the quarter mile to Jeff’s house.
Vi glanced at Evan out of the corner of her eye, “So, how’s your girlfriend?”
“Inja is fine.”
Vi wasn’t satisfied with his small talk. “Well that’s not saying much.”, she complained.
Evan looked over at her and scoffed, “Don’t you have a boyfriend anyway?”
Vi looked at him and made a face, “What does my boyfriend have to do with your girlfriend?”
Evan looked back straight, “Nothing, I hope.”
Vi rolled her eyes and looked straight ahead as well. “I’m just trying to be nice. It’s a long walk between here and there. It’s not like I don’t care about you. It’s not my fault we broke up, it’s Jeff’s, and I’m still helping you look for him right?”
“Yeah.” Evan agreed downheartedly.
“I’m just asking how she is because I care about you. I care about your relationship. I want you to be happy.”
Evan looked over at Vi, he wanted to believe her but he wasn’t sure he should. With Jeff gone he didn’t have a friend to talk to anymore about stuff. “It’s just…” he started then decided not to finish.
“It’s okay.” Vi reassured him, “You can tell me.”
