Teenage Ghost

Many nights Evan Sr fought sleep, he fought the nurses who brought his medication, and fought his family over what was right. He knew if he fell asleep again he would be back in Vi’s clutches. He knew the girl his grandson was dating was Vi somehow, though he was unsure how it was possible. He wanted so desperately to warn Evan Jr, but he never came to the hospital.
Evan Sr struggled with what he knew, what he knew he must do. Sleep began to win out as the clock clicked three am. He blinked for a second and opened his eyes on second period.
Vi turned around and waved to him.
Third row, second seat. Evan recalled. Second period, fourth row sixth seat, he turned around to see Jeff. Only there was no Jeff, there was a blonde student in his place taking notes. He then noticed it was the wrong teacher, he’d never seen this teacher before. Evan inspected all the students in the class, only to find the only familiar face to be Vi’s.
The bell rang and Evan confronted Vi. “I don’t know what you’re playing at, but you need to leave my grandson alone.”
Vi adorned her all too familiar wicked smile. “I’d be more than happy too. There just one little thing you have to do for me.”
“I’m not doing anything for you.” Evan stepped back from her.
“Then don’t expect me to do anything for you!” Vi glared back at him.
“What do you want.” Evan decided to hear her out.

“I want what everyone wants.” Vi walked closer to him. “I want to be loved, and accepted for who I am.”

“But who are you?” Evan questioned. “You’re not the Vi I used to know. She cared about me and my feelings, she never would have dated someone else behind my back.”
“Is that what you think this is?” Vi playfully laughed. “He’s my leverage, that’s all he is.”
    “Leverage?”
“In case you decide to change your mind.” Vi’s manner turned deadly serious.
    “What are you talking about?”
“You said you wanted to be with me, together forever. You remember that?”
“We were teenagers then, we said a lot of things.” Evan rationalized.
    “So you lied?” Vi questioned.
“I didn’t lie.” Evan tried to explain.
“You lied to me? Just to get what you wanted out of me?” Her eyebrow was raised as she accused him.
“I didn’t lie to you, Vi. At the time I really did feel those things.” he tried to calm her anger. “Things changed, the situation changed everything.”
“Jeff?” Vi’s anger was still hot. “Situations change, people change, love does not. If you loved me then, you would love me now.”
“I do love you now Vi.” Evan grabbed her pale face and looked into her soulless eyes. “Haven’t the past few months been wondrous? Weren’t they everything you ever wanted, and more? How can you doubt that my feelings for you were ever real?”
Vi succumbed to his explanation. “It has been a lot of fun. Better than it used to be.”
    “Way better.” Evan agreed.
Vi smiled at him and the two cuddle walked down the hallway as if it was just any other day.
