Teenage Ghost
The day had been long, the last bell rang and the school day ended. Evan and Vi walked out to the football field.
The football team didn’t notice them, they practiced as they did everyday at this time. The coach blew his whistle. Birds sang in the nearby trees. A light breeze blew in from the west on this perfect late spring afternoon.
The light fell on Vi’s black hair and disappeared within it as if her darkness swallowed it whole. It was some impenetrable force field, that kept her ivory skin perfectly safe from it’s harmful rays.
Evan reached out and touched her hair, it was so soft like the feathers of a dark angel.
“I love you.”, Evan looked into her dark eyes, they looked like two perfect round circles floating.
He noticed everything seemed clearer. The colors were more vivid today than any other day. The sounds were all clearer, as if he was hearing every one for the first time.
His sense of touch was incredibly sensitive. Vi was so soft he found it impossible to not touch her.
Vi smiled at him, and the two laid on their backs and looked up at the sky. Vi cuddled in close to Evan.
Evan held her tight with his right arm as he watched the cloud formations drift by in the sky.
He hadn’t felt so alive since he had been a child. He felt so happy and content, if he could freeze time he would.
In the far right of the sky the sun began to blaze brightly, at first he had not noticed it. Now it was beginning to take over the sky with a blinding white light.
The sounds that surrounded him felt as if they were going on somewhere far behind him. He felt an incredible pull towards the bright light.
Vi clutched Evan’s shirt tightly and scowled at the bright light that now filled the sky. She buried her face deep in his chest.
Evan looked up into the bright white light. From it’s depths walked out a slender woman he knew well. A woman he had loved and stood beside for more than thirty years. Her tears, her laughter, her commitments, and joys. All within a fraction of second he relived every second of their life together.
“Evan” June stretched out her arms.
“NO!”Vi screeched. “You can’t have him. He’s MINE!” She pulled herself up and stared into Evan’s eyes. “You promised to stay here with ME!”
June looked at Evan with only a look of love and peace, she beckoned to him silently with her open arms.
Vi glared a warning at Evan. “Stay here with me, we can be happy. Forever. Just like it was.”
Evan knew to stay with Vi would not mean peace, or rest of any kind. The feeling he was getting from the light was far more pleasing and assuring. An eternity of blissful awareness, filled with love, acceptance, and pure joy. He could not jeopardize eternity, this opportunity would not come again.
Evan Sr knew he was dying.
Vi was irate seeing that she was losing her battle. “If you abandon me again I will go after your grandson. I will make him pay for your every sin and crime against me.”
Evan looked at Vi, his thoughts began to flow towards his grandson.
“I wont let you.” Jeff stood behind her.
Evan Sr looked at his best friend and smiled.
“Go.” Jeff nodded behind him to the white light. “Go to whatever is waiting for you. I never had that choice so I will stay here. I will guard him for you. You have my word.”
Vi’s anger could not be contained she stood angrily and lunged at Jeff.
The bright light swooped down in Jeff’s defense and engulfed her as she leapt, she seemed to evaporate into thin air.
Jeff held out his hand to Evan and help him stand up. “I will watch over him, I promise.” He restated his vow.
Evan Sr hugged Jeff tightly. “I know you will. I trust you.” Evan stepped back from Jeff and smiled at him one last time.
Jeff watched as Evan disappeared into the white light, then he stood alone near the football field. It was close to one thirty in the morning, the moon shone brightly over head. There was not a cloud in the sky.
