Teenage Ghost

Addie was sound asleep in her bed when she was jolted awake by the noise. Both her land line and her cell phone were ringing. There was a loud pounding at the door followed by a loud voice, “Ms. Stone, please open up. This is the police.”
Suddenly streams of light began pouring through her bedroom windows. Addie screamed in horror, and clutched the covers closer. She could hear muffled sounds of police radios outside the window. Slowly the officers moved away from the window, the phones stopped ringing, and the banging stopped.
Addie got out of bed, shaking with fear. She grabbed her bathrobe and walked briskly to the front door. When she opened the door, she saw four police officers waiting.
“Please Ms. Stone, we’re going to need you to come with us. There’s a situation at Studemont High School.” the first officer said.
“I’ll just get dressed.” she tried to excuse herself from the entourage.
“There isn’t time Mam.” a female officer lurched forward from the back and grabbed hold of the principle.
“Lock the door.” the first officer interrupted.
Addie Stone sat in the back of the police car. She cowered and tried to hide from the on lookers. She was so embarrassed about her state of dress. In her Pink and Purple moo-moo nightie, under a thick grey cotton bathrobe. Her house slippers, though stylish enough and grey to match her bathrobe, could not be seen from the car windows. But most importantly was the doo-rag she had on her hair. She never left the house like this. They could have let her grab a scarf or hat in the very least. She thought about pulling it off, perhaps it would look more professional. She glanced in the rear view mirror and pulled off her doo-rag. Her short black hair was stiff and dry, but in the dark it did not look so bad. She fussed with it a little until she was satisfied with the result.
Addie let out a sigh of relief as she looked at herself in the mirror. She looked good, she looked fine, everything was going to be alright.
The officer in the passenger side noticed the principle’s relaxed mood and turned to her. “There’s a fire at Studemont High School. The alarms were not sounded. The fire department was called by neighbors who were awoken by the explosion.”
Addie exclaimed in disbelief, “The Explosion?” Ms. Stone suddenly became stressed all over again.
“Yes. And what we would like to know is, why were those alarms not set off?” the officer inquired.
“I don’t know, they should have been working.” Addie then began to think. Everything in her mind was jumbled up at the moment, it was impossible to think clearly. Slowly the mist began to clear and she remembered the break in. She rambled more to herself than anyone else, “There was that break in, but I don’t see how they could reach the fire alarms…”
“Mam, there was a break in at the school?” the officer asked. “Did you report it?”
Addie quit speaking and felt the blood rush from her face. She just realized, she hadn’t.
She replied meekly, “No.” She shook her head and a tear ran down the side of her face as the realization of what she had done set in. She could loose her job over this. She was just trying to protect innocent students. “We just thought it was a senior’s prank.” her voice began to trail as they turned the corner to the school.
Ms. Stone’s jaw dropped as she witnessed the fire raging out of control. Losing her job was really the least of her problems right now.
