Teenage Ghost
Eartha gasped loudly as the two watched the news in shock. Vi stood with an angry glare of vengeance on her face as the school blazed out of control to right of the screen.
The camera shook a slight bit and Vi was suddenly gone.
Jeff turned to Eartha, “I can’t stop her like this. I need my body back.”
“You think you can stop her?” Eartha got up and turned off the television.
“I know I can.” he stated firmly.
Eartha drew in a deep breath and began to think hard. She had never heard of this, not even a hint of a whisper. She thought of old texts about spirit walkers from Indian tribes, of gypsy stories passed down, and old manuscripts researched in the libraries. Not a single thing even alluded such as this could happen. She looked at the teen ghost for a while then spoke, “There’s only one thing left to do. You’re going to have to tell me how you got a body in the first place. Tell me everything that happened to you, after you died.” She sat down on her futon couch and waited to hear the story.
“What happened?” Jeff looked at her with mild disbelief, but when she said nothing he started with what he first remembered. “I saw my body on the stairs and Evan, not the Evan now but his grandfather. Evan Senior, was standing over me crying and wailing about how sorry he was and he wanted to take it all back. Then there was a rushing, like I was sucked into the stone concrete walls of the hallway. Everything was grey and cold, but not winter cold, more like autumn. Then one day, I’m outside the walls. Look up and I see Evan, only I know instantly it’s not Evan. I know who he is, and why he’s here. It’s almost like I can read his mind. He was so alone, and nervous. He was sad about his grandfather, and really needed a friend. I just had a body, nothing special happened.”
“How long had you been in there?” Eartha questioned.
“I died October thirty first, nineteen eighty eight.”
“Where at?” she inquired.
“Deerborne High, the middle stairwell.”
“Have you tried going back there?” Eartha questioned quickly. “Maybe that place regenerates you. Go to the stairwell and enter into the stone and see if it helps.”
Jeff didn’t hesitate, he vanished from the cluttered apartment and entered Deerborne High. He went into the middle stairwell and floated up into the wall. Everything was grey and cold like an autumn day. He walked out and looked at himself.
It had not worked.
