Teenage Ghost

Inja made excuses everyday to her parents about where she was after school. Sometimes it was Spanish Club or the Debate Team, other times it was Cheerleading or a friend on the squad. It was becoming harder each time to come up with something new to tell them.
Her parents were both suspicious of everything she did since she started high school. Inja knew as long as her grades did not suffer, her parents wouldn’t complain too much.
After all, some days she was actually at Cheerleading Practice or helping a friend out from the squad. Other days she spent late at school with her new friend, Evan. They studied on the picnic tables in the courtyard after school. She loved spending time with him, she loved the way he made her feel inside.
She’d never felt so alive and sure of everything. Every time she saw him her heart beat faster, she felt a little nervous and giddy at the same time. He was so cute! That’s what she thought about the most. She thought about his hair, eyes, and smile. She wanted to know more about him, and yet he was perfect the way he was. She could live not knowing as long as she could sit across from that smile.
Evan smiled at Inja from across the table. “You want to go see a movie this weekend or something?” he asked.
Inja couldn’t believe her ears. Her heart skipped a beat, and she felt as if she needed to gasp for air. She tried her best to keep her composure, but her eyes remained wide with surprise. “You mean, like a date?” she tried to hold back her excitement, but could not tell if she had.
Evan’s smile got bigger, “Yes. A date. I can pick you up at your house, and take you to the movies. My mom will drive, of course. I don’t have my license yet.”
Inja blurted out without thinking, “Yes!” Then immediately remembered who her parents were. “Oh.” she added as her happiness faded away. She began to think quickly of a way to salvage the date. “I can meet you at the theater.” she looked at him and hoped he would agree and not question why.
Evan half laughed. “That sounds great. I’ll text you later and we can pick where and what to see.”
Inja beamed with happiness. “Awesome.”, she smiled back at him. She tried to get back to her school work, but she found it impossible to concentrate. She’d never been this happy before, she only wanted to do one thing. Shout it from the rooftops.
