Teenage Ghost

Brenda sprinted home from the school bus, she was filled with excitement and happiness. Four years ago her best friend, Margo had moved to another state. It hurt so bad she cried for weeks without stopping. She thought she would never find another friend again, nor did she want to.
It was hard enough to find Margo in the first place. Only Margo understood her love for books, and cosplay. Other people just didn’t understand the feeling you got being your favorite character. It was embarrassing to even mention it to anyone who didn’t participate. She doubted she could mention it to her new friend Vi.
Vi would probably think it was nerdy and make fun of her. Brenda couldn’t take the risk of losing her new friend, she had to be cool.
She opened the door to the two story house, only to hear silence greet her. Her mother worked two jobs, and was only home from the hours of six am to two pm. During those hours she slept and expected no one to disturb her.
Brenda didn’t mind. There was little else that could be done about it. Her father had passed away four years earlier from cancer. There were bills to be paid.
    Brenda understood.
She ran upstairs to her room and glanced in the mirror at her dark, chestnut brown eyes. She imagined what she would look like wearing contacts instead of glasses.
Her phone vibrated from within her backpack.
It was Vi. The two texted about nothing for thirty minutes, then Brenda went downstairs to prepare dinner.
The house phone rang and the answering machine picked up. Brenda knew better than to the answer the phone, it might be a bill collector or lawyer.
“Brenda, it’s your Mother.” a woman’s voice was clear on the machine.
Brenda ran and grabbed the phone, “Momma!” She jumped up and down in the kitchen as she told her mother about her new friend. Then she stood perfectly still and began to plead, “Can she stay over Momma, please, please, please. I promise we’ll be real good, and we’ll clean up the mess, and…”
A loud squeal escaped Brenda as she began jumping up and down again. A barrage of Thank You’s filled the air.
