“Are you certain this place is safe from radiation?” Aisha walked towards the observation deck.
“We will find out. It has been over a thousand years…” Steven looked at his electronic tablet.
“Niet!” Viktor corrected the youth. “It has been just three hundred years. We have yet to find out if there will be any ‘Complications’ due to the choosing of this particular site. I opposed this from the beginning.” he complained bitterly.
It was his opposition that had landed him in his current situation. ‘Who better to over see operations, yeah?’ Alfonz had said to him. ‘You know what to look for already if things go wrong.’ For fifteen years now he still paid the price of standing up. Watching over these infant humans. Making sure they were fed and not fed upon.
Watching, always watching. Day and night. Protecting them against abuses. He had not had a moments rest since he had arrived here. He cursed Alfonz under his breath as if muttering a prayer with every encounter he had.
The facility had twenty vampires excluding himself working as staff, and not a single one had not tried to snack. The tech support were the worst of the lot. They could loop video and shut off the live feed.
Viktor had to find time he did not have to learn about video feeds, and wiring. He had to learn passwords and routing information.
Viktor was not pleased.
Of the three vampires who work in tech support only one still has all their fingers.
Viktor drew in a raspy breath and glared out the window at the adolescent humans scampering around. They made grunting noises, and were covered in mud and blood. Their hair was matted in large chunks. Some of the stronger males were looking to mate with the healthier looking females.
Soon they would have a new crop.
Viktor walked out of the observatory to the Blood Storage Unit. He pulled a prepackaged bag of blood out and drank it. The blood was flat and tasteless, it felt completely void of any substance at all. He barely felt his power renewed at all. He was not sure if that was due to stale blood or being over worked. He longed for sleep again. His thoughts turned to Alfonz.
He dialed up his friend, “Soon we will have a new crop.”
“Excellent. I will come up for an inspection and stay to ensure all things go smoothly.” Alfonz hung up on him.
Viktor felt a small shred of relief, soon he would be able to sleep again and all of this could be Alfonz’s problem.
