Vampires
On a street corner of Alvin and 9th adjacent from the Have-More Drugstore, stood a man. He had short dark hair, and leering light brown eyes. He stood at six feet tall, his body chiseled as if he was an ancient warrior. He watched a man in his mid twenties approach a young girl. He stood ready to rush in for aide. Clenching his teeth, he watched as the man reached out to grab the young morsel’s arm.
“Tsk.” Viktor watched in disappointment as Joe melted to the ground after touching the elementary school child.
“The parents rushed out to protect their young, but she did not require their assistance.” Viktor relayed the message over the phone to Alfonz. “It is getting too dangerous here. I thought these people were extinct.” He listened to the voice on the other line. “I understand that, I’m just saying. You know what these people are like, and fear breeds… Yes, I understand. I’ll use the disposables to check first.” Viktor became angry, “Niet! I told you! If too many of them find out they will turn to fend us off. It does not take more than one to die for them to know. You think they are mindless animals waiting to be slaughtered? Some of them think.” His rant leveled off, “Yes, I will let you know.” He hung up and took one last look at the family.
They had no “Tells”, no signs or crosses. The girl was not dressed any differently than any other girl her age. He thought they had all migrated out, what were they doing here? Did they know? Were they vampire hunters? If so the rules had changed, and anyone could be one of them.
Viktor walked into the abandoned building at 7th and Alvin. On the 13th floor slept five teenage vampire boys.
