Lucy’s phone went off right as the two girls were about to head out on the town together. “Hello?” she questioned the quickly moved the phone away from her ear.
Shaniqua could hear the person on the other end clear as day.
“You have got to come over here right now! There is something going on, I don’t think, I just, I can’t think right now. You have to come over here right now. Are you there?!?! Are you listening?!?! HELLO?!?! Did this phone just drop my call? You PHONES ARE ALWAYS DROPPING CALLS WHEN IT’S IMPORTANT!” the voice ranted.
“I’m here! I’M HERE!” Lucy shouted into the phone while still holding it away. She put the phone to her ear, “What is the matter with you?”
“I can’t talk on the phone. Just get over here. NOW!” Steven would say nothing else.
Lucy passed Shaniqua an apologetic look and hung up her phone. “Another time?” she offered.
“Sure, let me give you my number and you can call me.” Shaniqua added her number to Lucy’s phone. “And if there’s anything I can help with, you let me know. It sounded important, I have some pull with the consulate if you need some help.”
“I’m sure it’s nothing like that.” Lucy laughed and put the phone in her purse. “My brother is prone to be over dramatic at times. It’s probably room service related or something like that.”
Shaniqua laughed. “Still, if you need a friend. No matter day or night. Sometimes it helps just have someone who speaks your language, if you know what I mean.”
“Yes.” Lucy nodded. “That I do. Well I must be off to rescue my brother from whatever rat or mouse jumped off his coffee tray and scuttled across the room.”
The two women shared a quick laugh and Lucy set off alone.
Shaniqua walked to her room and prepared to stay there until Lucy called. She knew for a fact Lucy would be calling, especially if whomever had gotten to Janet had gotten to her brother. A panic quickly set over Shaniqua, what if Lucy was walking into a trap?
By the time Lucy had reached her brother’s room, he was already packed and ready to leave. His phone was on the bed and the battery for it had been removed and was laying beside it.
Lucy reached over and picked it up, “What’s going on?”
“I got a phone call.” Steven took the battery out of her hand as if it was harmful in some way. “Somebody knows we won the lottery.”
“Okay.” Lucy was wondering what drugs her brother was experimenting with.
“You don’t understand. Someone called here, on my phone. On my personal private phone, and said my name and your name.”
“So?” Lucy sat on the edge of the bed.
“So when I asked who it was he said, You’ll find out soon enough.” Steven grabbed his bags and put them by door. “I’m leaving, and if you’re smart you’ll come with me. We’ll change our travel plans. We’ll go someplace else. We can even go home if you want.”
“Well I don’t want.” Lucy stated. “You are freaking out over some phone call? It’s probably a prank, from one of your friends. Someone who you didn’t loan money too when they asked, and so they are getting you back. You’re making a big deal out of nothing.”
“And what if I’m not? What if I’m not, Sis? What then?” He stated in frustration. “I’m just supposed to die, or get kidnapped and ransomed off. You’ve seen those movies, what they do to American tourists.”
“Steven.” Lucy tried to be rational.
