Original X-roads-2003

“I need to talk to Father alone.” he turned to his father.
“Of course,” he dad was now confused as well, and walked into a room adjacent to the one we were in.
Jonothan set his arm around me as we followed him in. He closed the door behind him, “I need you to have a marriage annulled.”
His dad looked at him and raised his eyebrows, then sent a glance to me. “You know the law.”
“It’s not me that’s married. It’s for Jasylin,” he started to explain, his dad glanced back at him in curiosity. “She’s from Earth, Sertoff got her drunk and slept with her. She wasn’t aware of the laws.”
“This will be difficult,” he set his hands behind his back. “As you well know Sertoff is nobility, his father was the once reigning king.”
“Yes I know that. But that doesn’t change the facts, Father. She’s not from Threshold, so the law shouldn’t apply.”
He let out a breath, “An Earther.” He seemed to be thinking about something, then turned to me. “Do you know God?”
I screwed up my face, “Yeah, I know God.”
“Then why do you not abide by his laws?” he was perplexed. “I know even on Earth you know of God.”
“I just.” I don’t know what to say.
“You didn’t go to church on your planet? You didn’t know of his laws about drinking in excess, of sexual relations before marriage, killing perhaps?”
“I knew, I went, I just, I don’t know.” I didn’t have an excuse when it came down to it did I?
“Umm hmm.” he nodded. “Common of Earthers.”
Jonothan stepped in, “I know you have access to the system on Threshold.”
Gandar ushered me out into the living room where Jonothan’s mother waited, then went back to speak to his son in private.
