Original X-roads-2003

We had been in the cave for two days and three nights when we woke and were heading deeper in. The deeper passage branched out in two directions, Mesiaha wanted to press on one alone so we let her.
Jamie and I walked down the darker corridor til we heard faint voices in the distance. We crept quietly and against the wall, so we wouldn’t attract attention.
Of course as soon as we were near enough to see the camps fire, there was a strange whooping sound and we were surrounded by makeshift bandits. Pointy sticks poked and prodded at our backs, causing annoying amounts of temporary pain.
Sertoff rose from the fire and looked at the two of us in silence.
I felt a slight tinge of fear as I watched his etched features in the dancing firelight. His face had some slight stubble on it from being out in the wild, and he wore an angry grimace.
A familiar high tone rang out from the shadows to Sertoffs left. “Well, well, well what have we here?” Seleq Major walked out of the shadows and pulled his sunglasses down just enough to look at me from over them, “Little Miss Shortcut.”
I crossed my arms and shifted my weight, as I glared at him.
“Ya gonna throw uz in the pit again?” Jamie complained.
The crowd behind began chanting in a soft voice, “Pit! Pit! Pit!”
I shook my head in disbelief.
