In the Future…
Meeset walked out of the compartment and down the hallway stairs til she reached the outside of the building. She walked down several pathways til she was past the living area. She headed to the Water Station, where she had been working the past five months. It was a huge structure of pipes that led into the ground and up in the air, and eventually up towards a water tower.
They extracted water from the air and from the ground, they used the sun and wind to power the pumps and machines. They lived close enough to the ocean that the water in the air was plentiful. It took twice as long to extract it from the air as it did to pump it from the ground. The filters had to be changed twice daily. Changed, cleaned, and set to dry. When she first arrived at the Water Station, that was her job. Now she watched the many dials and gauges, to make sure the machines were running smoothly. This was the easy part, the hard part came if any of the gauges went past their designated marks.
Meeset wasn’t part of the mechanical crew, she’d failed test after test. The mechanical crew slept late and ate large meals, the only thing required of them was fixing the various machines around the compound. She’d failed the aptitude tests for it though, over and over. She was apt at cooking, farming, and cleaning. The Main Teacher had noted she was more observant than any of the other pupils. The Physical Teacher had wanted her to join the scouting teams, but Zahran Fordg would not let her be in harms way. Fordg wasn’t too keen on the idea of her working at the Water Station either, because of the dangers that it involved.
