Original X-roads-2003
“There are worse things than dying aren’t there? Death can only happen once, and it’s over.” he snapped his finger. “Then you are out of here. Then you are free aren’t you?”
Cas could feel her skin paling a bit as she silently watched.
“But being forced into a life of servitude, beatings to the near side of death. Things that will not kill you. I’d like to keep you alive.”
How comforting, Cas thought.
All through the night, Cas heard the screams from the women in the nearby village. She couldn’t sleep, all she could do was toss and turn listening to their voices being carried in the wind.
Then all of the sudden there was a hush coming from the main entrance. It fanned out quickly til everything fell silent. Casandra glanced outside her room, the guards were asleep. It seemed all the guards in the place had fallen into a deep sleep. Just in whatever positions they slumped into.
She walked out of the house and towards the outskirts of the village. She noticed it was just the guards, the girls were awake. Suddenly the silence was interrupted by shrieks of joy. The females who were able to escape ran from the rooms all over the grounds. It was like a sea of naked flesh rushing towards the end of town, rescuing others from it’s pack. Then like a flash, gone into the night. The stampede of thundering feet and shrieks of joy and freedom, faded off into the distance. Then returned silence and deep feeling of gloom suddenly. As if all the light had been suddenly sucked out of the place. All hope had left.
