Meanwhile in the Future…

“The whole city has been put on ‘Shut Down’.” Joia stated as she entered her three room compartment from the hallway door. “Some meltdown in the deficiency public housing district.” She seemed irritated, “These people get everything in life for free, they don’t have to work for anything. They get housing, clothes, food, and medical care that we work and pay for. You would think they would just be grateful.”
Meeset looked at her friends and said nothing. She picked up a school brochure from the local high school off the end table. The house was full of all the propaganda used to mold the minds of the youth from grade school through adulthood.
It was their job for the next three days to read everything they could from grade zero to grade twenty. If they weren’t able to fit in, the mission was a failure before it started. They had to know what everyone else here knew. The latest music, fashion, slang, the local culture, all had to crammed into three short days.
“We’re never going to get all this down in three days” Cria complained.
Joia was not moved, “Be grateful you are so young and have less to learn. Most people who come here to stay three days have to learn everything from the past fifty cycles, including this.”
