Original X-roads-2003

“So how do you get out of here?”
“You don’t get out of here.”
“I can’t stay here for the rest of my life, I can’t live like this.”
“No shame in living like this, we’re living ain’t we.” he held out his hands and looked around.
“Isn’t there a place where I can get a job?”
“There’s no jobs for people like us. What can we do? We can’t read or write, there’s no value to us at all. It’s all decided at birth. The only kids that have a way out of here are the hookers’ kids because maybe they have the right genes on their fathers side to get out.”
“That’s incredible,” I rolled my eyes. “Don’t they know it’s not about genes, but the human spirit.” I was disgusted.
“If you’re thinking about going anywhere but here, you can just forget it. They have all your info in the main computer from the day you are born, you can’t even enter the store without the right fingerprints around here. If you try then…” he sighed.
    “Eradication..”
    “On sight.” he looked down.
“Well I don’t buy into all this.” I walked to the street corner where a piece of newspaper had caught my eye as it wafted down the now silent street. Everyone in their buildings now, safe and sound. Another horn went off, I watched as my caretaker headed inside.
A man wearing the same outfit I was walked across the deserted street towards the building I saw earlier. He set his thumb on the plate. In an instant flash he was gone. There was no sign he had ever been there.
I wanted to go over and look.
My caretaker called for me to go inside, where it was safe.
