Original X-roads-2003

Meeset told me the story of how Jonothan had dropped her off on this planet years ago, before the satellites were launched. She told me a great many troubling things about the technological advances and goings on here. I began to grit my teeth a little as I listened to everything she said.
She opened my eyes to the world around me, I never knew every minute of every day was being recorded and watched. But there they were, cameras hidden everywhere in everything. All with one goal, but sold as public safety.
She told me some of the history of the major cities. How the people in charge manipulated situations and created public atrocities. Then the people would gather in the city and cry out and protest either for or against. The cameras recording every word, every person the whole time. Recording it all to a database, then using facial and speech recognition software it was easy to search the databases. The protestors were monitored, and their dna was studied exclusively.
Dawn Co, which started out as a simple energy company suppling the majority of power to the world. Then branched out into other divisions, they started a science division first. They said it was to research energy production. They studied all branches of science even the metaphysical. Medical science seemed to be where most of the money was pushed.
Then Dawn Co began to invest in private prisons, and making deals with the governments in power to ease the financial burden of rehabilitation. The prisoners dna was extracted upon arrival and studied, connections were being made with strands of DNA and certain behavioral problems. Dawn Co then began opening affordable heath care hospitals all over the world, but they were fronts for secret DNA collection. Soon the dna of every living person was on record and being studied.
Meeset told me of other studies that went on, studies there was no proof of. Conspiracy theories is what they sounded like, science fiction horror tales of a company trying to control a populace without them being aware. But I couldn’t help but wonder how true it was, as I looked at this world.
On the outside this world seemed like a perfect utopia, outside of this building. There was no crime not even here in Locaid, the weather was always perfect because there was no weather. The water was clean and safe to drink as was the food, and there was more than enough of it. No one went hungry or thirsty. Housing was available to everyone, even if it wasn’t ideal housing. We had started to clean our building so things were improving here, on the top two floors at least.
In fact the only crimes committed in the past two decades were from the rebels. People who lived outside the cities, somewhere off the grid. They fought against the corporation and it’s control. They stood for living free, they way nature intended. The way God intended, before Dawn Co eliminated God. I liked these rebels, I wanted to be one.
