Original X-roads-2003

After a few days I noticed the hole in security. The crews were rotated every three days. I noticed every once in a while there was an entire crew that was completely lax. They huddled off in a remote corner and neglected all duties.
Transport vehicles would run through the gates unchecked and unmonitored. In fact the lax guards didn’t even glance in the direction of the gate. One night it was left open all night, though one of the crew kept a half eye on it.
When a slow moving food transport arrived in, we took our chance and ran out.
We got past the camera’s and the nice garden like surroundings that welcomed visitors, and stood to face a vast wasteland of sand. Sand and a paved two street road that stretched out in a straight line as far as the eye could see.
My shoulders slumped with my hopes of getting anywhere. I know full well Eit is more than a two weeks walk, and we’ll be dead in three days without water.
We decided to take our chances and walk the road. Maybe some transport would take pity on us, or have a rebellious streak.
