Original X-roads-2003
We ran out as far as we could away from the village but the sea of black emerged as fast as we could run. Finally Meeset and I turned and stood our ground on the oncoming troops. Meeset reached down and pulled up a wood plank on the ground to reveal a small weapons cache. She handed me a large gun, that was almost too heavy to hold. Then she readied herself for the onslaught.
I took a deep breath but didn’t ready my gun, I left it stationary so I wouldn’t accidentally shoot anyone incase there was a chance of a peaceful resolution. As I glanced up, Mark emerged into view. He walked towards us with only five men behind him, the rest of the vast army stayed back out of view.
I glanced over at Meeset but she seemed frozen in time. I glanced back at Mark, I knew he was the cause of it.
“Come with me and I will leave this place exactly as it is. The animals will be allowed to live out their lives here in peace, this land will never be touched or squandered.” he offered.
“What about the people?” I nodded towards Meeset. “What about Meeset?”
He almost sounded offended, “The Rebels?” He glanced at Meeset and back at me. “They are all going to prison for what they have done. The crimes they have committed, destruction of property, infiltrating venues. They can not go unpunished. They are all guilty of subversion, treason against the state.”
“What about the children? They are innocent. Are you going to put them into Locaid Projects because they have the wrong DNA.” I complained.
“Hardly. They can not be trusted to put into the Locaid population.” Mark replied. “They have to be deprogrammed from whatever it is their parents taught them and rebuilt into productive members of society.”
I was in utter disbelief, “You’re going to do what?”
“These are my terms.” Mark did not back down. “If you do not comply, I will kill every animal on this continent, strip it of it’s resources, then burn anything left to the ground and build new municipalities. After incarcerating every man, woman and child, and ensuring them a lifetime of servitude.”
“What about Meeset.” I asked again.
“She’s a rebel and must be incarcerated.” Mark waited for a few seconds then asked again, “These are my terms, do you comply?”
“Yes.” I said and slowly put the weapon down. In a flash of white light I was standing in the penthouse that Mark owned in the city I had worked so hard to escape.
“Take a shower and change.” Mark motioned towards my bedroom door.
I took a deep breath and walked to my room. I was only doing this because I needed it, I hadn’t actually had a shower in days.
