Original X-roads-2003

It stood about ten stories high, light grey metal, rusting here and there as if it had been there for a few hundred years. And on the side there was a door. Jabetto motioned to me as we approached it, it was rusted shut. He took out his blaster and shot it. It blew a big enough hold for him to reach in pull the thing open. Once inside the noise was deafening. I put my hands over my ears as I scanned the place, on the other side was a small opening. We walked towards it and noticed a ladder going down several feet into the darkness. I took Jabetto’s lead as he started down. The noise became less intense as we got further down. “How far down does this go, my arms are getting tired.”
“I think I see a light at the bottom, it’s not much more.”
He jumped off the ladder and moved for me, I jumped beside him and glanced through the opening.
Torches lit up a large circular room, in the center of the room was a round conveyor belt fastened to a few gears and wheels that went up. There were men walking on the belt to make it go round, they stared straight ahead. Their clothes looked as if they hadn’t been changed in months, maybe years, dingy tattered. Their hair in disarray as if it had never been brushed, ever. We walked further in. The cogs seemed to be connected to a spinning pole which was connected to a wall of gears, whirring in constant motion.
“They must be running the fan.” Jabetto walked past them. “There’s another ladder.”
I walked over as he began to go down, the men were not even aware anything was different.
I started down the ladder. It was only half the length of the other one.
“It’s a whole other world here.” Jabetto gasped.
